Chasing the Long Tail String

The first question I’m sure is, “What is a long tail string?”

No it’s not something your cat plays with, nor is it knit by someone’s grandmother. A long tail string is simply a way to use the Internet to bring to a business the exact type of customer they are looking for at the exact time they are shopping for what you offer. I know that’s overly broad, but that’s why I’m here… to explain what it is and how it helps you. This is not new information or something to blow people away-it’s just practical marketing.

Naturally, when promoting a website, we all would like to be found at the top of a search whenever someone goes to Google or another engine. For example, if we sold used cars it would be nice to be found whenever someone types in used cars in the search window. Yes, it’s a great idea… but one look at Google shows that 154,000,000 other people have the same great idea and expect the same results. By stretching out the search term to used cars austin tx the results go down to merely 26,900,000. Still think you will be found? Hmm.  Now… even if you were one of only ten results (in this fantasy world I will create) let’s add another dimension: your website is listed and clicked on… only you don’t sell the type of car the person is looking for. The visitor wanted a used red Camaro and all you have are imports right now. You can spend time trying to convince them to buy a Toyota, but they probably won’t.

Let’s add another dimension: your Google listing was a pay per click ad. The red Camaro guy clicked through your ad and is now gone because you didn’t have what he wanted. By clicking, that empty lead just cost you money.

There’s a simple solution – the long tail string. You use it to bring in a customer who has what you want when you want. It won’t get as many searches as the big term, but it will bring you customers looking for what you have, be cheaper to buy for pay per click, and the competition for space is low. How would this work? You would try a term like used cars red camaro austin tx. This is what is known as a long tailed string.

Long Tail Searches

As the search parameters get longer the number of searches gets smaller, but more focused. If charted, it looks like this. The term “long-tail string” comes from the fact that the search comes from the right side of the chart.
